10 Tips to Punch-up Your Blog Copy

10 Tips to Punch-up Your Blog Copy

1. Give Me a Wow Headline … give it a go by writing a basic headline. Then after writing, go back and breathe some marketing life into it. My initial name for this blog post was: Writing Better Blog Copy (yawn.) The new name, using ‘punch-up’ also gave me an idea for a snappy visual. Successful Blog

2. Be Specific … focus on a specific angle within a topic and support it well. Six Pixels of Separation.

3. Get Personal … add your personal viewpoint which is the why-this-matters with a personal anecdote to help the reader feel connected to you, the writer. Public Words

4. Deliver Eye Candy … use subheads, subtitles, bold and color in your copy to guide the reader through the copy. If the subhead grabs … even if they don’t read all the copy, they have take-aways that may be enough to bring them back again. Beth’s Blog

5. Go Minimal … short sentences, short paragraphs, short stories. Give it to us in bite-sized chunks. Think mini Oreos rather than the full-size. Seth Godin

6. Use Word Fury … take extra time and to make your writing creative. Try to veer from standard, professional language and instead steer toward more informal, interesting, catchy words that are not too outlandish for your brand. The Future Buzz

7. List it … why do we love lists in blogs? Because the eye can pick off each item in a list in seconds … and lists are memorable, clear and easy to share. Social Media Examiner

8. Be Real … talk / write naturally. I love it when I read a post and I feel like the writer is sitting across the table from me chatting it up. Marketing Profs

9. Let Others Tell Your Story … share thoughts from others with quotations, paraphrasing and links to other blogs to round out and widen the appeal of your post. In Over Your Head

10. Tie Start to Finish … this is an old writer’s technique (not that I am old) that ties the kick-off thought to your conclusion. Some writers do this naturally. Give it a go as your reader will appreciate it. Occam’s Razor
